International Composition Competition for Women Composers—The Winners Have Been Announced!

The Upper Austrian Wind Music Association’s International Composition Competition for Women Composers concluded with great success. A total of 41 compositions from five countries were submitted.

Through this competition, the Upper Austrian Wind Music Association aims to raise the profile of female composers and their musical work and to promote new works for the wind orchestra repertoire. At the same time, the competition is intended to inspire more women to compose for wind orchestras in the future.

The winners were announced on October 12, 2026, during the extended board meeting of the Upper Austrian Wind Band Association. The two first-place composers were present in person and took the opportunity to introduce their award-winning works.

The selection of the ten best works serves as a special testament to the competition’s lasting impact: These pieces will be recorded and are designated as the mandatory third piece for the 2027 concert competition season. This gives the compositions a broad platform and allows them to be performed by wind orchestras throughout Upper Austria.
